Medication Aide

Program Type: Non-Credit

Description: The Medication Aide program prepares certified nurse aides and other qualified direct-care staff to safely administer medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse in long-term care and other approved healthcare settings. The program provides instruction in medication classifications and actions, dosage forms, routes of administration, common side effects and adverse reactions, and observation and reporting responsibilities. Students learn legal and ethical responsibilities, including scope of practice limitations, documentation requirements, medication storage and security, and residents’ rights related to medication administration. Learning experiences include classroom instruction and supervised skills practice using medication administration records (MARs), medication carts, and simulated clinical scenarios. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for state credentialing or authorization as a medication aide, in accordance with applicable state regulations.
